Rain Clouds - Sunny Plumeria

"Rain Clouds - Sunny Plumeria"
6" x 8" Oil on linen panel
$325.00

Just finished this miniature a few minutes ago.   I had misplaced my reference photo that I intended to use for this painting....could not find it anywhere...so I painted this from memory and imagination.   The yellow plumeria complement the blues nicely.

Below are two reference photographs of mine that will give you a hint of what else is on the easel right now.

This longhorn I photographed in Michigan.   When I lived in Texas I took very few pictures of longhorn cattle; just wasn't that interested in painting them back then.

This is a scene somewhere in Texas.  I believe I will make that a wooden windmill when I finish working on the painting.   Please check back soon to view the new work.

Horses Of Course

"February - Kauai"
8" x 10" Oil on stretched canvas
$500

Recently I realized this is the only painting I have available with horses in it.   It is time I paint more horses!  Below are some photos taken on the North Shore of Oahu recently.

I took around 40 shots of these horses that day....too many to post here  :-)    Below are some photos I took a few years ago on what I believe was North Padre Island in Texas.... we visited South Padre Island as well so my memory is not too clear, but I am pretty sure it was North Padre Island.

I really have my work cut out for me !   Right now I am working on two miniature farm scenes, and I may add horses to one of them.   I rather like the idea of painting the horses on the sand dunes.  Their owner was nearby when I shot these photos.

Thank you for stopping by to visit today !

Falls At Nuuanu Stream

Falls At Nuuanu Stream
16" x 12" Oil on panel

This scene is near downtown Honolulu in a small park.  I hope to create more paintings from my reference photos of this area.   That is pale pink ginger flowers in the foreground and they were actually there in reality; I did not add them from my imagination.

Tomato Sandwich Portrait

"Tomato Sandwich Portrait"
8" x 8" Oil on canvas

This painting was completed a few minutes ago.  I started it this past October but put it aside for awhile to work on other paintings.   To view the work in progress then go here    Below is another photo of this painting as a WIP.

Yesterday I ran errands and also went to Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki and took several photos there of the waterfowl and other things.   Below is a shot from the beach at the Hilton.

This photo would make a good painting.  To see more of the photos I took at the Hilton please go here

Now back to the easel !

Hello Halo (Seascape - Full Moon)

"Hello Halo"
6" x 12" Oil on canvas
$500

This painting was finished earlier today (Tuesday) and I am rather pleased with the results; it is my first time to paint a moon with a "halo".  It is on stretched canvas and the sides of the canvas are also  painted so you do not need to frame it; however, I recommend framing all paintings to give them the quality look they deserve.  This scene is not a typical Hawaiian beach... more like Florida or the East Coast beaches.  It was created totally from my imagination except I have taken several photographs of the moon with a halo.

Below is a much improved version of my earlier post of the landscape with a rainbow.   I liked it so much I made it my new "Header" at the top of this blog.

Somewhere Below The Rainbow

"Somewhere Below The Rainbow"
6" x 12" Oil on canvas

I guess the less said the better; not sure what to make of this painting I just finished today.   I might "tweak" the rainbow some more after it dries.   It definitely is more impressionistic than my usual work, perhaps because I completely made this scene up in my imagination.  It started out as a seascape with the same sky and rainbow but I just felt the urge to turn it into a landscape.   Let me know your thoughts about this  painting.

Stroll At Waimea Bay

"Stroll AT Waimea Bay"
12" x 16" Acrylic on canvas
Available

This is a scene painted from photographs taken on a previous trip to Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu.  The water was calm in this painting and the lifeguard boat was placed behind the lifeguard station at that time; they move the boat to a different location now and then.   Below is a photo I took this past Friday similar to this scene in the painting.

The lifeguard boat was in front of the lifeguard station this past Friday and the bottom photo gives you an idea of how high the surf was then.   It was suppose to peak at 18 to 22 feet that day.   The lifeguards had to keep announcing to the public that it was not safe to swim and that there were rip currents.   The waves were just awesome and I must go to some other beaches on the North Shore again real soon.

Yesterday I began two small seascapes so please return again soon .

Surf's Up - Chun's Reef

"Surf's Up - Chun's Reef "
12" x 16" Acrylic on gallery-wrap canvas
Available

This is a painting I completed some time ago, but thought I would post it again because yesterday I took off to go on a photo shoot of the North Shore as the surf was suppose to be 18 to 22 feet high.  I visited 3 different beaches, including Chun's Reef.    Below are some photographs taken yesterday at Chun's Reef.

The surf was just spectacular yesterday!  I really came alive and was full of enthusiastic joy at the wonderful sight.   Below is a shot taken from Chun's Reef looking towards Waimea Bay.

On my photography blog I posted some photos taken at Waimea Bay; you can view them by going here

Now it is back to the easel again for a few days; however, I want to make another trip to the North Shore of Oahu very soon when the surf is up .   In the winter the North Shore has the highest surf on the island, and people come from all over the world to witness it and the championship surf contests held there.

Please return again soon for new paintings.

Rainbow Over The Moon

Yesterday morning at daybreak I was thrilled to capture this photograph of a beautiful rainbow over the moon !  You have probably already guessed that I will just HAVE to paint this soon.....maybe in a seascape.   Just wanted to share this with you this morning .   You may see more of my "moonscapes" by going here

Yesterday other obligations kept me away from the easel, but not so today.   In a few minutes I will begin working on (and hopefully finishing) the two paintings of  gerbera with bees that I posted previously.

Thank you for stopping by and visiting today !

Ain't She Pretty ! (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle)

"Ain't She Pretty"
24" x 24" Acrylic on gallery-wrap canvas
Available

I have noticed on my statistics to this blog that many people are searching for turtles - on the Web, that is.
Since this blog started out being mainly a showcase for my miniature paintings, I had never posted this larger painting before of the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, which is found only in Hawaiian waters and is on the endangered list and carefully monitored.  This one is resting on the beach and sometimes they take naps while sunbathing.   I have taken many reference photos of these marvelous creatures....mostly on the North Shore of Oahu.   Hopefully I will find time to paint another one again soon.

Thank you for visiting today !

Works In Progress - Gerbera Daisies And Bees

These are works in progress I first posted this past Saturday.   The bottom painting still has quite a ways to go to completion, and the first image with two bees and two gerbera I might be able to finish the next time I work on it.    I rather like the interest the bees give the paintings.  I need to take more reference photos of bees in different "poses".   Let me know what you think .

Works In Progress - Gerbera

The paintings shown here on my easel are works in progress of pink gerbera daisies. They are each 8" x 8" oil on canvas.   I do not think I will finish them today but thought you would like to see what I have been working on this morning. I am thinking of including bees in the upper section of each painting...just for fun !

Below are my reference photos I took a few months ago of these flowers purchased at a florist.

Stayed tuned for the finished paintings !

Full Moon At Dawn (Hawaii)

Full Moon At Dawn
5" x 7" Acrylic on canvas on panel
Available

I finished this painting a few minutes ago; it is one I had mentioned in an earlier post that I had been working on.    Sometimes it is difficult to know when a painting is finished.  But then, perhaps it is like Paul Gardner has said, "A painting is never finished - it simply stops in interesting places."
This scene is based on a photograph I took on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Below is a better photograph of my wood duck painting I posted previously.

Oh So Blue - Drake Wood Duck

Oh So Blue
12" x 16" Acrylic on panel
Available

This was finished in the wee hours this morning (Friday).    The blue water is really very blue, but this photo exaggerates the blue a bit.  I rather like how the water turned out, especially the refreshing blue.   Let me know what you think.

Second Stage - WIP Wood Duck

Work In Progress- Second Stage
12" x 16" acrylic on panel

Guess it is pretty obvious that I made the water more blue now instead of with a lot of green in it.    This is still very much unfinished and I need to tone down the water more and correct and add some things.   Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow or the next day.

I welcome any questions and comments !

The Going Is Slow

This is a photo taken about 4 years ago on the "Big Island" of Hawaii.   I recently worked for about 3 days on a miniature painting inspired by this photo; although in the painting I put in a white farmhouse and a red barn and it is dawn with a full moon .    Now that I got your curiosity up, I'm not ready to post the painting yet because there is something just not to my liking about how it turned out so I am setting it aside for now and will begin work on my wood duck painting this afternoon.   But I did want to share with you these photos below of a beautiful waterfall on the Big Island.   Well, I goofed trying to align the pictures.  I hope to paint this waterfall found in a botanical garden whose name I can't recall at the moment.   I included the photo of myself and my son just to give you an idea of the scale of the waterfall.

I have  been painting very slowly lately !  Hopefully the wood duck painting will be finished in 2 or 3 days, so please visit again real soon.

Wood Duck - Work In Progress

Wood Duck - Work In Progress
12" x 16" Acrylic on panel

This is a brand new start on a favorite subject of mine - the Wood Duck drake, but also the ripples and colors in the water are always fascinating for me to paint.  This image was photographed outside.  Below is a photo taken inside on my easel.  Note the difference .....

Colors always look bluer when photographed outside; however, the lights inside on this photo is not 100% true either.   I am also working on other paintings, so please check back real soon !

Somewhere Spring Flowers - reworked

"Somewhere Spring Flowers"
5" x 7" Oil on canvas on panel
Available

I stayed busy today painting to my heart's content.  I wanted to add more bluebonnets to this painting I first posted here on October 31.   The title of this painting says "Somewhere" but it is somewhere in Texas along the highway between towns; so exactly where this scene was I am not sure.    I use to live in Texas and every Spring I took great pleasure in photographing the wildflowers there.  To see the previous post of this painting go here

I also worked on my flamingo painting today but I am having trouble with the flamingo's body.   I think I need to make the flamingo a bit larger.   Actually, it was larger but the proportions weren't exactly right so in trying to correct it I made it smaller.....too small.  Below is where it stands now.
work in progress
16" x 8" Oil on canvas

It is rather embarrassing to show this obvious mistake, but actually seeing it photographed here helped me see my error more clearly.   Sometimes when you have your face right in the painting while working, you lose sight of "the big picture".    Also, the pink waterlilies would be better if they were white maybe.   Painting is really a problem solving process !

Gathering At The Purple Barn

"Gathering At The Purple Barn"
6" x 6" Oil on canvas on panel
Available

This is a study I began a few months ago and put aside for awhile because of other works in progress that demanded my attention.   I took the reference photo for this painting a few years ago in Michigan.   It was in  the fall at the time, but there were no cows anywhere in sight; I just invented them for this painting to add more interest to the scene.

Thank you for visiting today !

Iris Garden Dance

"Iris Garden Dance"
18" x 24" oil on gallery-wrap canvas
Available

I felt a real sense of accomplishment when I completed this painting this Saturday afternoon.  Hope you enjoy all my hard work !   Painting is such a pleasure to me that I actually don't feel like it is work at all.
This painting turned out somewhat impressionistic compared to my other subject matter; but, that is okay with me.
