Orchid Grace

"Orchid Grace"
9" x 12" oil on gallery wrap canvas

I am not familiar with the proper name of this white orchid in the oil painting above, but I thought the title "Orchid Grace" fit it rather well.

Escape To Foster Botanical Gardens Today (Flowers and Trees and Egrets - Photos)

Rainbow Plumeria

I think the rainbow plumeria trees have the prettiest blossoms, but all plumerias are quite lovely, no matter the color.

I went ages without going on a photo shoot so last week and today (Friday) I satisfied that craving.    Today I only intended to spend a few minutes at Foster Botanical Gardens in Honolulu and take only around 30 or 40 photos; instead I spent about 3 hours there and took 187 photographs!  I had a grand time.  The photos I take can all be references for future paintings.   Plus, I have several photographs as prints on Fine Art America  which you can purchase there as well as note cards.
Below are photos of the Cassia tree.

I took several photographs of some cattle egrets that seem to always congregate at Foster Botanical Gardens.   Following is one of them.

White Ginger is found on the Hawaiian islands, but it is not as abundant as the red and pink.  I am happy with the photo below I took today of White Ginger.

White Ginger

There are many hybrid Hibiscus in Hawaii; below is the Hawaiian native white hibiscus.

Hawaiian  Native White Hibiscus

Hybrid Orange Hibiscus (not native to Hawaii)

The orange hibiscus photo above I took in front of an apartment tower on my walk to the botanical gardens today.  I love that intense color !

Now, back to the easel tonight and tomorrow and splashing paint on canvas.... I mean on panel.   Lately, I have enjoyed using Gessobord panels as a support, although I still have several stretched canvases I need to use up.   Check back soon for more paintings.

Dinard Blue Heaven - Stage 2 Work In Progress

"Hurry? I never hurry.  I have no time to hurry."  - Composer Igor Stravinsky

Dinard Blue Heaven
Work In Progress- Stage 2
12" x 12" oil on gessobord panel

This cattleya orchid is taking some time to complete.  It will need to dry before I work on it again.   As much as I would like to complete a painting in one sitting, most of the time it is my habit to work in stages and not hurry.  Stay tuned for the completed work.

Dinard Blue Heaven Orchid (Work In Progress)

The above reference photograph is of the gorgeous pale blue to lavender cattleya orchid Dinard Blue Heaven.   I fell in love with it at first sight and after bringing it home took over 100 reference photos of it.  Today I began a rough lay-in of oil color on a panel and you can see the work in progress below.

12" x 12" oil on panel
Work in progress

It looks pretty rough right now, but my aim was to first cover the panel completely with color.  The details will appear as the work progresses.   To view more photos of this orchid on a prior post, go here.

Tropical Beauty- Singapore Plumeria (Reworked)

"Tropical Beauty - Singapore Plumeria"
9" x 12" oil on gallery wrap canvas

White plumeria blossoms, or frangipani, are especially elegant although the various pink and yellow varieties are quite lovely as well.   I love them all!  Everywhere you look there are plumeria trees throughout the Hawaiian islands.   Their blossoms are quite popular for making leis.

I reworked this painting today and am much happier with it now. Basically, I added more violet and blue to the flowers and increased the contrast.  The earlier version may be seen by going here

Golden Glow (Yellow and White Plumeria)

"Golden Glow"
Yellow and White Plumeria blossoms - Work in Progress
12" x 12" oil on stretched canvas

This painting is almost finished.... need to tweak it a bit with some lavender-blue shadows on the flowers.  If I did that now while the yellow paint is still wet,  the lavender-blue would turn a greenish mud color.  Check back for the completed painting!  I enjoy painting plumeria blossoms and intend to work on more of them in the near future.

I am also working on a couple of other paintings right now that I am pretty excited about.  I feel so blessed to be able to paint, which I love to do and I derive much satisfaction from a successful painting.

"Tropical Beauty"
9" x 12" oil on gallery-wrap canvas

I worked on this some this morning; may "tweak" it a bit more later, but basically it is finished.
