"Desert Majesty" (El Capitan - Guadalupe Mountains)

12" x 16" Oil on canvas
$1500

I finished this painting yesterday after debating whether to add more detail to the mountains and the rocky foreground; finally decided to let it be.    It is very typical of the Chihuahuan Desert where the Guadalupe Mountains are located.   This particular mountain peak is known as El Capitan and rises about  1000 feet high above the desert floor.   This area is on the southwest tip of the mountains and is about 90 miles east of  El Paso, Texas.    More information about this painting and the Guadalupe Mountains National Park may be found here

Hope you enjoy this new landscape and now it is time to move on to a new painting and more miniature works.

Waikiki In Watercolor #1 and #2

                                                               5" x 7" Watercolor Study #1

Earlier this week two "firsts" happened !  For the first time in my life I painted en pleine aire , a French term for simply painting outdoors whatever you happened to be focused on.   The second "first" was .... it was the first time I had painted in watercolors in a very long time.    This is the first painting from that endeavor, and I had a grand time with it.   I found a nice shady spot in Waikiki looking towards the Waianae mountains and had a go at it.   I enjoyed it so much that I went back this Saturday morning (yesterday) and composed the painting below.

                                                          5" x 7" Watercolor Study #2

Both of these studies could use a little more touch up work; especially the horizon line on Study #2, but wanted to share what I have been up to lately.    I just began both of these paintings by laying in thin washes of color without sketching the scene first in pencil.    Seascapes come natural to paint for me which is why I chose these two for my first try at watercolor in ages.   As time goes on and I paint more pleine aire  studies,  I will chose more elaborate beach scenes or whatever strikes my fancy.   May try painting at the Honolulu Zoo if they will allow me to do that; will have to check into it.   There are many possibilities for subject matter in Waikiki and all over the island, for that matter.

Please contact me if interested in purchasing these paintings or for commissioning any subject matter you would like..    You may also search for other paintings here by going to the "Search This Blog" gadget in the upper right-hand corner of this page and typing in your choice of subject matter, such as seascapes, etc.

Thank you for stopping by !

Orchids Versus Depression

                                                                        8" x 10" Oil
                                                                            $500

The depression in the title of this painting is of course referring to the pink depression glass.  I have had those items for a long time and it felt good to finally paint this glass.   So many things I want to paint; so little time !!   So happy to finish this painting as I need to move on to something new for another competition.   I have several other still life reference photos with these cymbidium orchids and other still life props.    All in due time.....

Hope you enjoy this painting and please come back and visit again soon !

More Work on WIP (coffee, orchids, and depression glass)

                                                                     8" x 10" Oil

Worked on this some more this evening and it is beginning to excite me a bit to see how it is coming along so well.     Maybe the next session with it I will be able to complete this painting.    Once I saw it photographed on the computer, I realized that spoon handle might be a bit too long and tall so will have to adjust that.     The colors are pretty true in this photo;  I took a few photos outside in daylight and also some indoors with the painting on the easel under lights.    This was one taken outside.

As always, your comments and questions are most welcome !

Work In Progress (orchids, coffee, pink depression glass)

                                                              8" x 10" oil WIP

This is my next project to finish.  I had to set it aside for awhile so I could finish a larger, major piece which can be seen  here.     The above work in progress is in the very beginning stages, and I hope to finish it by this weekend.   It will be my first time to paint some pink depression glass I bought specifically to use as still life props.   Below is the reference photo I took of the set up.

You can probably see the paint smudges on this photo !   I really have been busy painting and doing art related projects and will try to post on this blog more frequently in the future.   I would like this blog to be a "daily" painting site of mine; however, I am not a fast, prolific painter by nature...at least, I don't usually finish a painting in one sitting or in a day's time.  We shall see what happens with that daily painting endeavor in the near future.
