Tropical Shores (Re-worked) - Seascape

"Even after all this time the sun never says to the earth, 'You owe me.'  Look what happens with a love like that, it lights up the whole sky."  - Hafiz

"Tropical Shores"
5" x 7" oil on panel
$275

This oil seascape cried out to be improved from a previous post   This ocean scene is totally from my imagination although it is typical of Hawaii and other tropical beaches.   The blues are not quite as intense in the original painting as this image depicts.

Moonlight Drama - Seascape

"Moonlight Drama"
6" x 6" oil on gessobord panel
$350

It was difficult to accurately photograph the various blues in this oil seascape, but this image is pretty close.  Blue seems to be the only color my camera has "issues" with   :-)     I will be working on several 6" x 6" paintings for awhile, with a larger work now and then.

Beautiful Baby Makapu'u Beach

"Beautiful Baby Makapu'u Beach"
6" x 8" oil on canvas

I have painted this area once before in watercolors from a slightly different angle/spot.   I have several reference photos of there and intend to paint this beach again in the future.   There is a pier between the two white buildings in the far background.

Baby Makapu'u Beach is located on the windward or eastern shores of Oahu, Hawaii, near Sea Life Park .
It is usually not very crowded, and locals fish out by the rocks near this spot.  It is a great place for children and for tide pooling.

Tropical Beauty- Singapore Plumeria (Reworked)

"Tropical Beauty - Singapore Plumeria"
9" x 12" oil on gallery wrap canvas

White plumeria blossoms, or frangipani, are especially elegant although the various pink and yellow varieties are quite lovely as well.   I love them all!  Everywhere you look there are plumeria trees throughout the Hawaiian islands.   Their blossoms are quite popular for making leis.

I reworked this painting today and am much happier with it now. Basically, I added more violet and blue to the flowers and increased the contrast.  The earlier version may be seen by going here

Haleiwa Paradise (Hawaiian Seascape)

"Haleiwa Paradise"
12" x 16" oil on canvas
$1575

These white outrigger canoes are always here on the beach at Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu.  The surf is usually more calm here and it is a wonderful beach park for families.  Not too far from this area is the beach where segments of the TV show "Lost" were filmed.

Palm Trees, Dental Floss, And Works In Progress

Reference photo of Haleiwa, Oahu

What do palm trees, dental floss, and my recent works in progress have in common?  Lots!   Below is a rough lay-in of oil color on canvas of the above scene.

12" x 6" oil on canvas
work in progress

I did some research on the internet trying to find out what kind of palm tree that was with the white "flowers" on it, but soon realized that with nearly 3000 different species of palm trees throughout the world, my search   might take days and I would never get this blog post finished tonight !  I feel good about this initial color sketch and believe this painting will flow with ease.   By the way, that reddish color is not regular burnt sienna but Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Sienna which I prefer to use now.  I have all of the Daniel Smith Quinacridone colors in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and I highly recommend them.  Another interesting earth color by this manufacturer is Sedona Genuine; I have not checked their catalog lately but I hope they still make that color as I use it fairly often in landscapes.

About the dental floss, it is one of many things made from the palm tree.   Other uses include shoe polish, surfboard wax and on and on.   Below is another landscape I am working on at present along with the reference photograph I took while in a moving vehicle.  I wish I could remember where this scene was located.

I may only put a portion of the fence in my painting. The three horses need to go back farther into the middle ground.   I suppose it is obvious that I compose as I go, rearranging and experimenting all the while.  Each artist has their own way of working; I never make a complete sketch before I begin laying in color, unless I am working in watercolor, then I partially sketch the subject.

Thank you for visiting my blog and please return again soon to view the progress on these and other paintings.
