Brilliant Solution - New Wave Artist Palettes and Black-Crowned Night Heron

You have all heard the saying "When my ship comes in....."   Personally, I like what Jonathan Winters said, "If your ship doesn't come in, swim out to it!"    The inventors of the New Wave artist palettes showed some excellent initiative for fulfilling a need for artists to have a comfortable and lightweight wooden palette.    They are designed to hug your body and reduce fatigue.   Many artist are already using these palettes, but some may not have heard about them yet so I thought I would write a short post about them.   They also have a new palette for acrylic painters called "Easy Lift" where the acrylic paint peels off easily after a painting session.   Another thing that is new is their grey pad disposable paper palettes, each containing 50 grey sheets.    I have been painting for a long time using another brand of disposable palette that also has grey sheets and I highly recommend the grey ones for proper color mixing and seeing the true value of colors.
Check out the website http://www.newwaveart.com for more information and to view videos about their products.   They have a link to show you where in the USA their palettes are available.

"The Shadow Of My Eye"
Black-crowned Night Heron photo

I photographed the fellow above last Friday at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.  I love the shadow his huge eye makes in this shot.     Black-crowned night herons are not tiny and cute and colorful, but for some reason I am very fond of this bird and will continue to paint it as time goes on.  For new visitors to this blog, below is a recent painting of mine of one of these herons.

Slim Pickin's (Brazilian Cardinal On The Beach)

"Slim Pickin's"
11" x 14" oil on panel
$1525

This oil painting of the Brazilian or Red-crested Cardinal is pretty true to my reference photo I took at Bellows Beach on Oahu.   There was sand inside the broken coconut shell, but evidently this fellow found something to nibble on in it as well.   On the tip of  the bird's beak are some sand particles.  The wind was blowing, which made its crest more flat against its head instead of standing up straight as in my reference photo of another cardinal shown below.

Woody At Greenlake

"Woody At Greenlake"
8" x 10" oil on panel
$595

I completed this oil painting tonight (Tuesday) from a photo I took at Greenlake Park in Seattle, Washington.  There were other ducks in the photo, but I opted to paint just one wood duck, using my reference photographs I took somewhere else.  It was difficult to get the colors just right when photographing the painting, but this is very close to the original artwork.

I began this painting at the same time as I began working on my red-crested cardinal ....(see here ) .... and being a smaller work it was just easier to finish first.   Tomorrow I tackle the cardinal painting.   Stay tuned for the finished result.

Brazilian Cardinal (Work In Progress- Oil Painting)

Brazilian or Red-Crested Cardinal

Isn't this a charming fellow !   I just wanted to share another photo of the striking Brazilian Cardinal. They were introduced to Hawaii around 1930.  They are abundant on Oahu and I believe I like them better than the mainland's common red cardinal, which is also found in Hawaii and was introduced here in 1929.   Below is my oil painting of the red-crested cardinal in stage 3 of development .... still have a long way to go.

I need to make more adjustments to his body shape and feathers and add a lot more detail everywhere.  Having a blast with this painting!

By The Light Of The Moon - Black-Crowned Night Heron

"By The Light Of The Moon"
8" x 10" oil on gessobord panel
$525

I took the reference photo of this Black-Crowned night heron at Barking Sands Beach on the island of Kauai.   It was broad daylight and there was no moon out.   While painting this, I considered adding more branches to the tree with some in front of the moon; then I decided I liked the simplicity of it without the extra tree branches.
