Autumn Of Our Life

"Autumn Of  Our Life - Ecclesiastes 9:9"
12" x 16" Oil on panel
$1575

This oil landscape is the first painting in my series concerning the paths people take in life and the good or bad consequences thereof.    I promise I will, for the most part, concentrate on the good.   :-)       I try to capture beauty in my work; there is enough bad in the world without portraying it on canvas.   The obvious beauty here is the Fall foliage ; the other beautiful thing is a married couple still in love and together in the autumn of their years.

My reference photo for this painting was taken at the Washington Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Seattle a few years ago.  There really was an older couple in my photograph, but I changed them up a bit with their clothing in the painting.

"Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls."  Jeremiah 6:16

They Board Horses Don't They

"They Board Horses Don't They"
8" x 16" oil on panel
$ 1275

This oil landscape was inspired by a visit to Kawailoa Ranch on the North Shore of Oahu.  It is just outside the quaint artsy town of Haleiwa and near "Turtle Beach" (Laniakea) .   One of the trees on this property was featured on the TV show Lost.

It is great to be painting again after back pain kept me from the easel for a few days.  I will go back to working on a Fall landscape next; check back soon.

Outta Whack

Lesser Flamingo

This lesser flamingo photo rather shows how I have been feeling lately; I was going strong with my painting and then my back went outta whack!   Stay tuned for more paintings soon.   I will attempt to paint tomorrow; I am almost finished with one landscape and have another one off to a good start.

Speaking of landscape paintings, on Matthew Innis' blog he has an informative article about  an excellent young artist, Dan Schultz, which shows a step-by-step procedure of a painting in progress to its completion, as well as other works by this artist now residing in Ojai , California.   I am always curious about what colors  other artists use, and the article gives Schultz's palette as well.  I personally should use a more limited palette, but I positively love color and enjoy trying various new colors from time to time so I have a wide assortment to chose from.   Check out www.danschultzfineart.com

December Art Sale - Diamond Head Lighthouse And Beach

"Diamond Head Lighthouse And Beach"
9" x 12" acrylic on canvas
$355
(unframed)

Diamond Head Lighthouse is a short distance from Waikiki Beach on Oahu.   This is one of my more impressionistic works; sometimes when I stress color in a painting it will take on a more "painterly" look than my tighter realistic ones.

Again, this is a special price for the entire month of December, after which- if the painting is not sold -it will revert back to its original price.  Email me at reynoldsrenditions@gmail.com  with your information and I will send you a PayPal invoice if you would like to purchase this painting.

December Art Sale - "Near Monterey" (Seascape)

"Near Monterey"
8" x 10" Acrylic on canvas
$325
(unframed)

This acrylic seascape is of an area outside of Monterey, California.   I used my artistic license and added the woman and extra seagulls.   California was very special to me (still is), but this was painted before I moved to Hawaii and experienced its awesome beauty.

Please email me if interested in purchasing this painting at this special price during the month of December  and I will send you an invoice through PayPal.  Also, view my contact page on this blog for more information on how to get in touch with me.   Again, shipping is free if you live within the USA.

Paths And Gardens (Landscape Photographs)

"Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls...." Jeremiah 6:16

The above reference photos of mine were taken a few years ago at Bandelier National Park in Los Alamos, New Mexico.  The park is on the slopes of the Jemez mountains and covers 33,000 acres.  I have several more photographs I shot of the area, and like I always say "I hope to paint these soon".    :-)    I have been seriously considering how often times people take the wrong path in life -- or the right path -- and the consequences.  This has inspired me to start a new series soon depicting paths in my paintings.   Stay tuned !  Right now I am painting two landscapes, one of Hawaii and another of Nevada, and I am pretty excited about them and will finish them soon so check back often.   Below is my reference photograph of a path at Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle.

I often visited this 230 acre park which is on the shores of Lake Washington.  Fall is such a wonderful season to spend time there.   Below are a couple of garden shots I (again) "Hope to paint soon."

The two shots above were taken in the Japanese Garden section of Washington Park Arboretum.

I must get some sleep now so I will be fresh and energetic to work on two landscapes tomorrow.  Have a great weekend everyone !

Plumbago At Kawailoa Ranch (Hawaiian Landscape)

"Flowers are the music of the ground, from earth's lips, spoken without a sound."  - Edwin Curran

"Plumbago At Kawailoa Ranch"
9" x 12" oil on panel
$695

This oil painting of horses and blue plumbago flowers is of Kawailoa Ranch on the North Shore of Oahu.  It is right outside of the quaint town of Haleiwa, near Laniakea (or "Turtle") Beach.   I have taken many reference photographs of the area and will be painting more scenes from this ranch, which primarily boards horses.  Plumbago flowers bloom year round here in Hawaii on an evergreen shrub.

Banyan Trees And Other Things To Paint (Photos)

This photo of mine was taken in Waikiki of one of the many banyan trees to be found there.  I fully intend to paint this scene before too long.  It rather has a message, don't you think ?   Earlier, I posted to my photography blog and gave some detailed information about banyan trees if you would like to take a look.

Above are 3 photos (which would be great references for new paintings) of my daughter-in-law at Chun's Reef on the North Shore of Oahu.   She did not pose for me; I took the photos without her knowledge which always results in a better shot.

Perfect rainbow at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu.   For the first time in my life I saw "the end of the rainbow"  up close  in the shot below at Waimea Bay.

After quickly taking this photo I walked about 8 feet or so to the end of the rainbow, but there was no pot of gold to be found.   :-)     And the rainbow disappeared as soon as I reached it.

I am posting these photographs because I have been told not to paint for a couple of days -- doctor's orders after a minor procedure today at the clinic.   I will be so happy to paint non-stop again once all of these appointments, etc., are done with.

Please return soon and Mahalo for visiting !

Horse Farm - Work In Progress and Photo

This photograph is a reference for an oil painting I began this morning.   It is a horse farm on the North Shore of Oahu, just after leaving Haleiwa Beach.   Below is the beginning stages of the painting.

Work In Progress
9" x 12" oil on panel

Yes, I will include the flowers and the mailboxes in the final stages of the painting. There was also some deep pink bougainvillea along the fence farther to the right that I might include as well as, or instead of, the pale blue flowers shown in the photo above.
I also began another oil painting of the same area last night, reference photo below.

Stayed tuned for the completed paintings!   Thank you for stopping by to visit my blog.

Sailing At Dawn's Full Moon - Seascape

"Sailing At Dawn's Full Moon"
6" x 6" oil on panel
$350

This sailboat was near Waikiki.  I guess it is obvious I seem to be in a seascape painting mood lately.

Evening Light - Hawaii Seascape

"Evening Light"
6" x 6" Oil on panel
$350

This scene is on the leeward coast of Oahu at Ko' Olina resort.   I used a little artistic license with the house in the right mid-ground, otherwise it is true to the actual place.

Tropical Shores (Re-worked) - Seascape

"Even after all this time the sun never says to the earth, 'You owe me.'  Look what happens with a love like that, it lights up the whole sky."  - Hafiz

"Tropical Shores"
5" x 7" oil on panel
$275

This oil seascape cried out to be improved from a previous post   This ocean scene is totally from my imagination although it is typical of Hawaii and other tropical beaches.   The blues are not quite as intense in the original painting as this image depicts.
For more information or to purchase this painting, please email me at reynoldsrenditions@gmail.com

Moonlight Drama - Seascape

"Moonlight Drama"
6" x 6" oil on gessobord panel
$350

It was difficult to accurately photograph the various blues in this oil seascape, but this image is pretty close.  Blue seems to be the only color my camera has "issues" with   :-)     I will be working on several 6" x 6" paintings for awhile, with a larger work now and then.

Almost Heaven - Seascape painting

"Almost Heaven"
6" x 6" oil on gessobord panel
$350

This is a scene of the beach at Chun's Reef, on the North Shore of Oahu.  It was a breezy day with fantastic clouds.   Clouds inspire me almost as much as the ocean does.

By The Light Of The Moon - Black-Crowned Night Heron

"By The Light Of The Moon"
8" x 10" oil on gessobord panel
$525

I took the reference photo of this Black-Crowned night heron at Barking Sands Beach on the island of Kauai.   It was broad daylight and there was no moon out.   While painting this, I considered adding more branches to the tree with some in front of the moon; then I decided I liked the simplicity of it without the extra tree branches.

Red Jungle Fowl Oil Painting ( Work In Progress)

Work In Progress
Red Jungle Fowl
16" x 20" Oil on gessobord panel

This oil painting of Hawaiian Red Jungle Fowl is what I have been working on all this past week.  It still needs a lot of work to bring it to completion, but I wanted to share with you what I have been up to.     Below are various stages of the painting's development.

Stage One  - Work In Progress

After completely covering the panel in a thin coat of acrylic pyrrol red, I roughly laid in the composition with splashes of color.

Stage Two  -Work In Progress
Acrylic

Stage Three - Work In Progress
Acrylic and Oil

In stage three I began using oil paints, mostly in the background trees and foliage.   The reddish burgandy plants are native Ti or Tea Leaf foliage plants.  I have one on my patio and they come in various shades of red, green, and varigated leaves.

Please return soon for the completed painting of Hawaiian Red Jungle Fowl.

Wake-Up Songs (House Finch Reworked)

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." - Lou Holtz

"Wake-Up Songs"
9" x 12" Acrylic on canvas (re-worked)
$625

This is an older painting that I worked on this morning to correct the bird's anatomy and color.   I am much happier with this little house finch now.    There are several palm trees outside my studio and several house finches sing away in the early morning; especially when the palms bear their "fruit", which they like to eat.
These birds were introduced to Hawaii from California sometime before 1870.

Below is one of my reference photos for another painting in progress right now.

These are wild Hawaiian Red Jungle fowl found throughout the islands.   Please return soon to see the completed painting.

"Blue Heaven"
12" x 12" oil on gessobord panel
$1200

This oil painting of Dinard Blue Heaven Cattleya orchid was finished this afternoon.  It was a joy to work on it, and hopefully I will do a larger version with four blossoms in the near future.

Dinard Blue Heaven - Stage 2 Work In Progress

"Hurry? I never hurry.  I have no time to hurry."  - Composer Igor Stravinsky

Dinard Blue Heaven
Work In Progress- Stage 2
12" x 12" oil on gessobord panel

This cattleya orchid is taking some time to complete.  It will need to dry before I work on it again.   As much as I would like to complete a painting in one sitting, most of the time it is my habit to work in stages and not hurry.  Stay tuned for the completed work.

Dinard Blue Heaven Orchid (Work In Progress)

The above reference photograph is of the gorgeous pale blue to lavender cattleya orchid Dinard Blue Heaven.   I fell in love with it at first sight and after bringing it home took over 100 reference photos of it.  Today I began a rough lay-in of oil color on a panel and you can see the work in progress below.

12" x 12" oil on panel
Work in progress

It looks pretty rough right now, but my aim was to first cover the panel completely with color.  The details will appear as the work progresses.   To view more photos of this orchid on a prior post, go here.
