Almost There !

Work In Progress
Iris
18" x 24" Oil on gallery-wrap canvas

It doesn't look like I spent about 4 more hours on this painting since I last posted , but I did.  It still has a ways to go, but I believe in one or two more painting sessions it will be finished.

For some reason I have been fascinated by taking reference photos of the moon the last few weeks.  How romantic, right ?   Yep, my cat and I sit out on my lanai (patio) at weird hours of the night and early morning and we enjoy nature together !   Below are a few shots I have taken of the moon in a couple of different stages .

The third photo from the top does not clearly depict the red circle on the outside of the "halo" around the moon...nor other colors as well.   Still it is very good for reference.  I am not sure how I will use these photos in a painting other than in landscapes and seascapes.

I also worked on my flamingo painting some more today.    I have been busy working, just painting too slow to have a finished work until a day or two from now.   Thank you for stopping by and visiting today !

Getting There !

Iris - Work In Progress
stage 2
18" x 24" Oil on gallery-wrap canvas

This is coming along fairly well.  My reference photo along with the first stage of the painting was posted here this past Sunday, November 13; if you would like to see them, just scroll down to that post below.  This painting may be too wet to work on tomorrow so I will go back to working on my flamingo.  The reference photo for that painting is right here :

I started this on an 8" x 16" canvas; wish now I had used a larger canvas, but I do enjoy working on  8x16 panels or canvas.  Please check back soon for progress on this painting !

Pretty Exciting !

Iris -WIP
18" x 24" Oil on gallery-wrap canvas

Well, this new work in progress is very exciting to me !   It is a new subject to tackle -always exciting- and also it is a larger size canvas than what I have been working on lately.   Below is my reference photograph I took in a suburb of Salt Lake City a few years ago.    Even older photos can get me excited to begin a new work !

It is obvious I changed things a bit in the arrangement of the Iris in my painting and things may change more as the painting progresses.   The painting so far is just a very rough lay-in of color and will be more defined as time goes on.
I also worked on my flamingo painting today (Saturday) and it is coming along just fine.   Have to wait for it to dry to put more details in later.  Stay tuned !

Serious About Cereus - Completed Work

"Serious About Cereus"
12" x 12" Oil on canvas

Completely finished this painting a few minutes ago.   The title refers to how serious this bee was going about his job inside the blossom of a cereus cactus or night-blooming cactus, as it is frequently known by.  I took the reference photo for this painting around 6 to 6:30 on a July morning, because as the sun got higher in the sky the flowers were usually spent and gone by around 10:30 a.m.

Please contact me if interested in purchasing this painting.

Let There Be Light

"Let There Be Light"
9" x 12" Oil on canvas
$625

This is the finished painting of a work in progress I posted here recently.   I changed the foreground quite a bit and feel it is much improved.    I photographed it indoors a few minutes ago as it was not yet daylight here in Hawaii; nevertheless, the colors are pretty true to the original painting.  I will photograph it again outdoors when the sun is up in an hour or so.   If you are interested in purchasing this seascape, I will be happy to email you the photo of it taken outside.

Serious About Cereus

"Serious About Cereus"
Work In Progress
12" x 12" Oil on canvas

This is the beginning stages of a "serious" bee within the huge, lovely cereus cactus blossom; the cactus famous for and sometimes called  'the night-blooming cactus'  .   The bee is definitely serious about his job, but I have a feeling he was having a good time as well     :-)
Below is my photo reference for this painting.

Every year in July these beautiful blossoms appear on a somewhat trailing vine-like branch of the cactus.   I have many reference photos I have taken of them.   This, however, will only be the second time that I have actually painted this flower.   Below is the other painting.

Work and Rest - Images For New Paintings

It is still Sunday here...in 30 minutes it will be Monday.   Sunday is usually my day of rest from painting and most other things as well, but I cooked several recipes (well, 3 recipes)  for enough food to last awhile so I will be pretty free to paint the next few days.  One recipe was homemade chicken soup some of which I will freeze for later.  Yes, cooking is creative too !   Yesterday I began two new paintings and hopefully they will be dry enough to work on again tomorrow morning.   Below are my reference photos for those new works.

Bee having a blast in a cereus cactus flower

Lesser  Flamingos

The photo of the Lesser Flamingos (which are native to Africa and Asia) I captured at the Honolulu Zoo.  I may paint it soon, but it is not the reference for the painting I began yesterday; the computer gave me a hard time uploading the correct photo.   The more I think about it now,  this might be a better painting than the one I began on Saturday    :-)

There are 4 other paintings I have begun that are in various stages of development  that I will also be concentrating on in between waiting for current works to dry before continuing them.   I just felt the urge to do some wildlife again .

Wish me happy painting the rest of the week !

Persimmon time again !   I intend to paint more persimmons soon, but feel the need to work on some larger, major works for the most part right now.   I will continue to paint miniatures now and then as well.

Somewhere - Spring Flowers In Landscape

"Somewhere - Spring Flowers
5" x 7" Oil on panel
$225

I just felt the need for a change of pace so I have been working on two miniature landscapes lately.  This one is finished and is painted on museum quality Raymar canvas panel.  The blue flowers are not that bright in the original painting; close, but not exactly right. I photographed this image outside.   Below is a work in progress I am hopefully going to finish this evening.

Work in progress
5" x 7" Oil on panel

Those will be 3 cows laying down in the foreground; unless I decide to put more cows in the distance, this is pretty much how the painting will be when finished.    I need to enrich the color a bit more and work on the foreground trees and so on.

Please check back tomorrow for the finished landscape with the cows.  I appreciate your interest !

Tomato And Mayonnaise Sandwich Half

"Tomato And Mayonnaise Sandwich Half"
8" x 8" Oil on canvas
$375

I put finishing touches on this painting early this morning, but mostly completed it last night.   What a fun painting !   I also worked on the other tomato sandwich painting, but it has a ways to go yet to be finished.
In the above work, some of those black "dots" in the mayonnaise are black pepper specks.  I love to eat tomato sandwiches !  Below are some photos of different stages of this painting.

Work in progress
Very rough initial color lay-in

In progress
 Second stage

You can easily see how I change things a bit as I go;  in a way that is more creative than painstakingly drawing a detailed sketch on canvas and then "coloring" it.    With other mediums, like watercolor, one might have to by necessity make a detailed drawing first on paper; these photos of mine just show the way I personally like to work.   Everyone has their own method that works best for them, and that is as it should be.
Please feel free to comment here or send me an email at reynoldsrenditions@gmail.com if interested in purchasing "Tomato And Mayonnaise Sandwich Half" or any other original of mine.  Thank you for your interest and for visiting my blog !

Lemonade, Persimmons, and Chinatown

5" x 7" Oil on panel
In Progress

I reworked this in oil today; it was a painting I completed first in January of this year in acrylics.  I was just not happy with the acrylic version, so worked over it in oils.   Below is the previous acrylic version.

Tomorrow will be decision day: is the oil version finished or does it need more refining, etc.  I also worked on the persimmon painting today.   It does not look like I did much to it (shown below) but I really did.

Work in progress
6" x 6" Oil on canvas

Just for fun and to share with you, today I photographed some persimmons and other produce in the Chinatown section of Honolulu.   I thought you might find it interesting; the prices as well as the local vendors, so please scroll down to view.

I have toyed with the idea of painting some people-filled Chinatown scenes and the produce and local vendors.    I took several other photos there as well and some just might make good paintings.

I have had some appointments the last two days so have not been able to paint as much as usual.  The next few days I will live, eat, and breathe painting continuously so please return often to my blog for more new work.

It Came From Barnes And Noble

"Barnes and Noble Mug"
6" x 8" Oil on panel

I fell in love with this mug from the bookstore Barnes and Noble and bought a set of 4 about 3 years ago.  One has since left this life due to a breakage, and I have never seen this particular mug in that store again.   Anyway, just completed this oil painting in the wee hours this morning.  I have been working on 5 paintings at once, as I have to wait for one to dry before I can proceed with more work on it and therefore I work on another painting while I wait.... and so on.   Below is the corrected and completed painting I posted here this past Sunday.

"Seeing Red"
6" x 8" Oil on panel

Both of the above paintings are available for your collection and will be shipped after 10 days to allow plenty of time for the oil paint to dry before packaging it for shipment.   Contact me at reynoldsrenditions@gmail.com for purchase information.

Below is another WIP I will work on later today.   Those are persimmons and grapes on the plate; I plan to make the grapes more of a dark blue color, but we shall see what happens as I fling the paint around !

Yipes ! Stripes!

"Seeing Red "
6" x 8" Oil on Raymar panel

This is what I have been working on today, Saturday.    I see I need to make some adjustment in the shape of the reflections in the vase on the right side.   I will work on it again tomorrow to correct and finish it.   I love the red striped material and will probably use it often in paintings.   Below is a painting done awhile back in oil.

"Reflections"
12" x 16" Oil on gallery-wrap canvas

Both of the above paintings are available for your collection.   The "Seeing Red" miniature will be available after I tweak it some more tomorrow.  I will post it again after I make the needed adjustments.

Remember the orchid that followed me home last week?  It only had two lovely opened blossoms on it when I posted it then, but it did have 2 buds that opened fully yesterday and here is a new photo of it.  I just had to share it with you; it is so beautiful and I am inspired to paint it very soon.  I took several reference photos of the buds as they opened gradually.   The name of this orchid is Lc.Dinard "Blue Heaven", although it is definitely a pale lavender color instead of blue.

Kiwi Treat - Again !

"Kiwi Treat "
5" x 7" Oil on panel
$125

I reworked this painting today in oils; the previous version was in acrylics and may be viewed by going here
To me the painting is much improved now.   It has been such a pleasure going back to using my oil paints again.

I worked some more on my tomato sandwich paintings today and began another new work of persimmons.  It is Fall,
and Persimmons are in all the markets right now here in Hawaii.   Please return here at my blog soon for more new paintings !

Tomato Sandwich - Progress on WIP's

Here is the reference photo I took some time ago for the painting below.

8" x 8" WIP

Still Using Acrylics here to get more detail before beginning to finish in oils tomorrow.

The above is obviously the reference photo for the painting below.  I decided to leave out the knife.

This 8" x 8" WIP has more definition now than it did yesterday.   I took out the foreground tomato slice today; still using acrylics but will begin in oils for the next stage and the completion of the painting.

I hope you enjoy seeing the stages of how the paintings develop and the changes I make along the way.   I enjoy sharing and hope it helps young (or mature) emerging artists as a teaching tool.   Some artists prefer to sketch everything out in detail before the begin the actual painting; and that is fine, if you prefer to do it that way.   I like the freedom of developing the painting as I go and it gives it more of a fresh feel and approach for me.    One can, of course, call my reference photos my "sketch".

Sweet Water Hyacinth

Sweet Water Hyacinth
4" x 4" Acrylic on canvas

I finished this painting this evening and will begin working in oils tomorrow on some still life paintings.  Below is a reference photograph I took of a water hyacinth.

As I stated in a previous post, I have this photograph available as a print at Fine Art America.   There are also many other photographs of mine for sale there as prints; prints of my paintings as well, all of various subject matter including wildlife, seascapes, and landscapes.    You may visit my page there by going here

Tomato Sandwich Anyone ?

Work in Progress 8" x 8"
Tomato Sandwich half
The 2 white blobs behind the sandwich will be salt and pepper shakers

Work In Progress 8" x 8"
The Tomato sandwich in the making
I love tomato sandwiches !  They are also quick and easy to make when you are in hurry.   I very seldom eat bacon now, for health reasons, but that is yummy with the tomatoes as well as lettuce  .....BLT sandwich !   Nowadays, I just eat the tomatoes alone on the sandwich, along with mayonnaise and salt and pepper.

I quickly and very roughly laid in color yesterday in acrylics, but will finish the above 2 paintings in oil with lots of detail.   I also began two other still life paintings as well yesterday which will also be finished in oil paints.  I worked some more on my  4" x 4" water hyacinth yesterday, but I am having trouble with the lavender color .... getting it just right in acrylics is not as easy as with oil paints.   Since it is part of an acrylic set of 4 paintings the same size, I am reluctant to finish the water hyacinth in oils.  Here is a photo of it....remember it is still a work in progress and is rather in a "rough" stage right now.

4" x 4" WIP
Water Hyacinth
By the way, you may purchase a print of a photo I took of a water hyacinth at the Fine Art America link on this page , above and to the right .    Or  click here instead.      Thank you for viewing my art !

Look What Followed Me Home Today !

Cattleya Orchid Dinard "Blue Heaven"
Reference photo

Yep !  Was out and about today and this beauty somehow followed me home !   It is really a pale lavender color and this one will definitely be painted with oils on a good size canvas.   Well,  12" x16" or 16" x 20" maybe.   I took a few quick photos of it earlier today and will take more photos tomorrow perhaps with some background print material and some still life objects. I did not attempt that today because I painted for awhile.  Below are some other lavender orchids that I photographed at various places on Oahu.   Enjoy!

Truly hope I find time to paint all of the above reference photos.   Let me know if you have any flower photos of your own that you would like me to capture in oils on canvas; send me an email for information.

Today I worked on the 4"x4" water hyacinth and started 2 new miniature still life paintings.   Stay tuned!
